One work that particularly resonates with me is The Power of Vulnerability by Brené Brown. In this book, Brown explores the concept of vulnerability and how embracing our imperfections can lead to greater connection, resilience, and authenticity. Her insights align with my belief in the importance of self-compassion, acceptance, and embracing our humanity in the face of societal pressures to be perfect. It's a powerful reminder that vulnerability is not a weakness but rather a source of strength and connection in our lives. Music and art inspire me and are integral to my therapeutic approach. Recognising their capacity to evoke emotions and aid healing, I embrace their inclusion in sessions. Music soothes the soul and allows for emotional expression and relaxation. Likewise, art serves as a powerful tool for self-expression and exploration. I believe in their transformative potential for deeper understanding and personal growth in therapy if the client would like to utilise these tools.

Sooo many inspirations. I gravitate to books and films that celebrate the individual's courage to stand for justice and humane values, even at the risk of social or personal ostracism. Where faithfulness in the inherent goodness that is within human beings is explored. Music draws us into connection with our deeper selves, our joys, our wildness and our despair, and I love too many musical genres to name any in particular. Having said that, the poetic wisdom of rock poets of my youth have had big influence - Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Cat Stephens, Lennon & Macartney, Joni Mitchell. Various writings of Buddhist wise people, 'In an Unspoken Voice' by Peter Levine, 'The Body Keeps the Score' by Bessel van de Kolk, 'A Path Made By Walking' by Julie Diamond are influential books in my learning towards becoming a therapist.

The story of pain and tragedy put together capturing the audience in the suspence of this intense human experience of one's emotions. The experience of tragedy, love, pain, grief and every other emotion, how it all has a rippled effect on others and their community.

I find all forms of creativity inspiring, but Caitlin Moran's 'How to be a Woman' popped into my head for its humorous take on how we can beat ourselves up for not meeting the expectations of others. Like the counselling experience, much of what it says could be something you already sense or know, but might not have been able to articulate so clearly, or perhaps needed reminding about. I think it also inspires us to embrace all of the authentic, messy parts of who we are, and even find the joy in them.

It isn't a book, film, song, event or work of art that inspires me the most. It's my best friend, Juls. She loved me and saw something special inside of me when no one else could. She believed in me, even when I would give up on myself, or lose hope. She saved me more times than I can remember. The world lost the most incredible woman when she lost her battle with breast cancer at 35, at a time when her life was in many ways just beginning. I miss her so much every single day, but am so very grateful for her friendship over two decades, and the incredible memories I hold deep within my heart. To Infinity and Beyond!

I am currently reading My Grandmothers Hand's by Resmaa Menakem which offers a very insightful and alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racial divide! Very inspiring!

Ultimately, Frankl suggests that we cannot avoid suffering in life but even under the most difficult circumstances, we can derive a deeper meaning from it. I like the process of rather than trying to eradicate our suffering, welcome it with open arms like we would a guest who has come to stay for a while. Treat it with acceptance, compassion and empathic love. Engage and build deep relationship with it. Ask, 'what is the value, meaning and purpose of this suffering?' The book, In My Skin by Kate Holden is an inspiring journey of strength and character, and is an interesting account of how her life spiralled out of control and how she came back from the brink. I like how relatable she is and how open, honest and thought-provoking the narrative was. I love all types of music and how much it can change your mood. If I was pushed to choose right now, it would probably be something upbeat from the Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd or Counting Crows.

Similarly, every nation and person has their viewpoints and requirements on a global scale. By nurturing compassion, we can bridge these differences and discover common ground. By cultivating compassion and understanding, we can address global challenges together. This means acknowledging the various internal 'parts' that make up our global society and respecting their unique needs. Compassion enables constructive, empathetic discussions and cooperation to create a better world.

There are many books, films, songs, events and works of art that have inspired me and on a daily basis, new ones that inspire me. I am also constantly inspired by people, many of whom would not consider themselves to be inspirational, who are struggling to eke out an existence, overcoming adversity and who exhibit incredible courage battling illness and difficult challenges that life throws them. Perhaps the most significant piece of writing that inspired me, was one of my textbooks from my training, Robert Karen's “Becoming Attached - First Relationships and How They Shape the Capacity to Love” (1988). The title of this book unseated a deep inexplicable fear in me, which manifested itself in a reluctance to even open the cover of the book, followed by procrastination over reading it. Once I forced myself to read it (I had to, as it was compulsory reading as part of my training), I began to gain an understanding of what my fear was about and to work through it. The book provides an excellent summary of the history of Attachment Theory and the significant impact of early attachment history on a person's ability throughout life, not only to love, but to handle difficulties or even crises in their lives.

I volunteered in Mexico myself briefly - and this book began my interest in the importance of culture and community in mental health (and the role that song, dance and laughter also play). Film - Samsara…a film without dialogue but a brilliantly choreographed story line with moving images and music. Song - “I Can Only Be Me” - written by Stevie Wonder, performed by Eva Cassidy. There are so many! I'm inspired 'in the moment'. I would rather experience a moment of inspiration, or awe, than hold one or two things that I consider the inspiration. There is much in the world to be inspired by: the Northern Lights; sunrises; moments between friends or lovers or animals; serendipitous discoveries; a piece of music which makes my feelings soar; an unexpected short poem which captures the essence of something I haven't been able to articulate; feeling my own heartbeat; too many things to mention in 200 words. But despite what I have said in Qu 9, the world can be a beautiful and inspiring place. Just look at those pictures of Earth taken from space. Miraculous.
