  • Life has a tendency to throw many curve balls our way, whether it be natural disasters, relationship breakdowns, anxiety, depression or loss of a loved one. Sometimes we just need a moment to refresh and allow ourselves to reset. To find that balance in our lives again.

Counselling is a tool that can help many find mental respite in the toughest of times. Whether it is through the development of new skills and strategies or a safe place to process emotions and feelings.

Counselling doesn’t have to take place in an office or sitting down in a chair. In fact at Refresh Counselling we aim to work with every client to make sure they are comfortable in their environment. Whether it is in your home, the local park or walking along the beach.

    Therapy Approach

Whilst I like to focus on CBT, Mindfulness, and Positive Psychology, these approaches may not work for everyone. I will work with each client to assess what approach is going to be the best based on individual needs and presentation and adapt the therapeutic intervention and style to match the individual rather than trying to make the individual match the therapy style.

When engaging with clients around mental health or behavioural support, I will work with you to find out what your needs are and explore the different options of helping you to achieve this. Everyone has different needs and coping strategies and exploring this is the first stage of the therapeutic relationship. Progress is usually seen at around one month of therapy.

    A conversation with Cameron Trenowden

    • I have always had a passion for working with people and thoroughly enjoy supporting people to make positive changes in their lives.
    • I think it is always important to look at all angles and walks of life. It is easy to get lost in our own lives and forget that others experiences are often different from our own. If we make assumptions about others lives without first understanding we will often be wrong.
    • Mental health and complex needs are an interesting area for me and I like to work with clients to explore their needs with a person centered approach.
    • I primarily use CBT, Positive Psychology, ACT, and Mindfulness to guide me in my therapeutic interventions but will adapt my style to try and meet the needs of each individual that I support.
    • This depends on a lot of variables and there is no definite answer. Usually I would be looking at 3-4 weeks for some signs of changes in symptoms or presentation, however, this is heavily dependent on the effort the individual puts in and the therapeutic relationship that is created.
    • Therapy was helpful in my life as it taught me that we are the only ones who can make ourselves happy. If we rely on others and their view of us, we will often chase something that may never be achievable. By focusing on what I do and how I do it, my well-being and mental health was positively impacted and my relationships in life improved.
    • Learning about each individual and their needs and being able to adapt, change and learn new ways of supporting individuals. As therapists we are always learning.
    • A 'bad hair' day is inevitable. Sometimes its important to accept a bad day for a bad day and when these happen for me, I lean on my self-care strategies to help me get through and work towards making the next day better.
    • The world is a place that is changing at unprecedented speeds and trying to keep up with this is exhausting. It takes a toll, physically, emotionally and financially. If our community or environment is not set up to support us, these changes feel and often are harder. As these changes keep occurring, we keep trying to keep up and our communities get smaller, and our supports get smaller.
    • The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of my favourite movies because it explores a lot of mental health and philosophy.
