Philosophy & Vision

I am a clinical counsellor with over 15 years of experience, specialising in men's mental health. I combine a clinical perspective with a relatable, masculine touch, aiming to be a supportive ally for those navigating life's complexities.

Known for my practical approach, I build trust with clients from the very first session. My curiosity helps me uncover insights and explore new pathways for growth together.

I have extensive experience assisting adolescent boys, young men, first-time fathers, and separated fathers who face challenges like anger management, isolation, relationships, and finding purpose. My flexible counselling style equips clients with essential skills to tackle these issues effectively.

I am dedicated to providing the tools necessary for meaningful change, enabling clients to navigate their challenges confidently and emerge stronger.

Background

My journey began at 11, delivering the local paper. I was a touring musician in my 20s and 30s, juggling roles in the Australian Public Service, hospitality, and music events, even running a record label and a garden maintenance business.

Post-graduation, I dedicated myself to a Men's Wellbeing Org, as a program manager for separated fathers. At 'Interrelate,' I worked as an individual and couples counsellor, honing my skills in relationship dynamics. At 'Uniting,' I provided counselling to young people, and men with families at risk of homelessness along with clinical supervision. I have presented at National and International Conferences and I facilitate programs on parenting teens.

My private practice has been a constant throughout.

    A conversation with Adrian Workman

    • I chose to pursue a career in psychotherapy and counselling largely due to the transformative effect my own therapy had on me during mid-life. After experiencing significant challenges, I sought support and was fortunate to meet a skilled practitioner who guided me through my journey.

Understanding mental health has always intrigued me, and I truly "caught the bug" during my personal work. This personal experience ignited a passion not only for helping others but also for finding meaningful work that aligns with my values.

After co-facilitating several groups for parents, I felt motivated to formally train as a therapist, eager to make a positive impact on the lives of others while fulfilling my own desire for a meaningful profession.
    • The philosophical approaches that have profoundly shaped my professional development are existential therapy, humanistic therapy, and logotherapy.

Existential therapy has deepened my understanding of human experience and the quest for meaning. It guides me to engage with clients on fundamental questions of existence, enabling them to explore their values and make authentic choices in their lives.

Humanistic therapy emphasizes personal growth and the potential within each individual. This perspective inspires me to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment where I can connect meaningfully with clients, facilitating their journeys toward self-discovery through active listening and empathy.

Logotherapy, developed by Viktor Frankl, focuses on finding meaning even amid suffering. This approach resonates with me as it provides a powerful framework for helping clients navigate life's challenges. I strive to assist them in identifying and pursuing meaningful goals, fostering resilience and hope along the way.

These philosophical influences have enriched my therapeutic practice, guiding me as I support clients in their quests for meaning, growth, and authenticity.
    • I am deeply intrigued by the transition points that shape our identities throughout the human journey.

Phases such as becoming a father, preparing for retirement, or contemplating mortality each present unique challenges and opportunities for growth.

The emotional shifts that accompany parenthood reflect the richness of love and sacrifice, while changes in focus challenge individuals to redefine priorities and find balance.

Leaving home may spark independence but often brings feelings of loss.
Navigating the complexities of ending relationships teaches resilience, and the process of coming out emphasises authenticity. Mourning lost opportunities highlights the importance of honoring the past.

Considering the challenges of retirement raises essential questions about identity and purpose, fostering reflection. Ultimately, the quest for meaning and purpose inspires a commitment to support others on their journeys.

By exploring life’s transitions, we can cultivate connection, resilience, and a deeper understanding of authentic living.
    • My therapy methods blend various approaches, focusing on the individual’s unique experiences. I integrate person-centred therapy to create a safe, empathetic space for clients. Through talk therapy, I promote open dialogue, while family systems techniques help explore family dynamics.

I use Socratic questioning to encourage self-reflection, and somatic experiencing to access the felt sense in the body. Motivational interviewing fosters intrinsic motivation for change, and narrative therapy allows clients to reframe their stories, empowering them to transform their identities. This holistic approach fosters healing and growth.
    • Progress in therapy varies for each client. The initial step of engaging in counseling is a significant change point, marking the beginning of a therapeutic alliance. Developing a treatment plan tailored to individual needs also plays a crucial role in this process.

Complex factors like trauma or high stress can hinder immediate progress. However, once we establish safety and trust, along with a clear treatment plan, many clients begin to notice notable changes after about six sessions. This foundational work is essential for effective healing and growth.
    • Therapy has made a significant impact on my life. It has helped me process complex issues and work through the challenges that arise. I believe I am a much improved version of the person I was when I first started my therapy journey.

I feel like I'm a better partner, father, and friend. I'm more equipped to manage new challenges as they come. Overall, I experience a greater sense of happiness and stability in my life.

Therapy has given me the tools to navigate difficulties with confidence, and that has made all the difference.
    • Being a therapist is an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s a true privilege to work with people in this role.

While it's easy to focus on major breakthroughs, I find the subtle, nuanced changes that occur over time equally significant.

This includes increased resilience, where clients develop a stronger ability to face stress and challenges. There’s also a noticeable shift in self-awareness, as many gain new perspectives on themselves and their situations, fostering deeper insights.

Clients often express their thoughts and feelings differently, indicating progress in their understanding. Overall, the improvement in their emotional well-being and quality of life is deeply fulfilling.

These subtle yet profound changes are real gifts that make the work immensely worthwhile, reinforcing the idea that both small victories and significant milestones contribute to the therapeutic journey.
    • Absolutely, I do have 'bad hair' days! It's part of being human.

I've learned that prioritising self-care is essential for navigating those moments. Regular clinical supervision and engaging in my own therapy help me process challenges, ensuring I show up authentically for my clients.

After all, how can we guide others if we're not doing our own work? Embracing those tough days reminds me to take care of myself, which makes me a better therapist.
    • The foundational crisis is climate change.

It is the multiplier of other crises, and is interconnected with many more global issues.
    • I’m an avid follower of the arts, music in particular. Over my lifetime I have been fortunate to be an audience member at numerous events that have impacted me deeply, and inspired my own creative journey.

Music is for mood, so I guess I have many ‘go to’ artists and albums depending on whether I feel like dancing, cleaning, crying, singing, or all of the above!
