Philosophy & Vision
My approach to therapy always prioritises your needs and goals. I take a very gentle and empathic approach, which offers hope & where you can be heard, respected and valued. Your story is paramount and I am honoured to be the person who hears it. We work as a team, I do not push you where you don't want to go, unless you ask me to.
I believe that counselling should be compassionate, kind and understanding. However, if you like, I offer strategies and experiential activities in the session and for (optional) homework.
Perhaps you need to put your many years of life into some kind of perspective and talk through your experiences to make sense of it all. Perhaps you are struggling with the overwhelming demands of your life, family, work or even the voice of your inner critic. Perhaps you need hope and support to move on from a painful or unhelpful situation. Perhaps you need help working through the loss of a loved one or pet.
Background
I bring to this work many years of personal and professional experience. There include school teaching, school chaplaincy, business management, parenting and working in the field of disabilities. I am currently also employed as a school counsellor part-time.

Therapy Approach
Therapy is first and foremost client centred, which means a gentle empathic approach, where we work as a team. The direction taken in therapy will be determined very much by your needs and goals. My approach is compassionate, kind and understanding. If you like, I offer strategies and experiential activities in the session and for (optional) homework.
My work with you is particularly informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) which work extremely effectively together, and make use of the types of strategies mentioned above. A conversation with Robyn Bowman
-
A complicated family of origin and experiences of my own child-raising years led me to see the value of someone external to talk to. I benefitted enormously from the kindness and empathy of a professional counsellor. I had always been interested in why people do what they do, why they think and feel as they do. It made sense to study this topic, and it evolved into a counselling masters where I made sense of more of my own experiences, and learnt that the value I had seen in previous experiences was actually evidence and science based. Its a wonderful career.
-
Person centred, with deep listening, empathy and understanding. Through the compassion and help of the counsellor, the client can learn their own self-compassion. This has had the most significant impact on my counselling work.
-
I'm very interested in anxiety, stress, overwhelm. I am particularly interested in health related anxiety, as well as perinatal mental health.
Additionally, grief and loss, aging, relationship change, parenting. -
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused therapy with the many excellent strategies, metaphors and activities that go along with those modalities. Additionally, on occasions, aspects of art therapy, narrative, solution focused and emotionally focused therapy. It depends very much on the need of my client.
-
As soon as they have booked their first appointment. Such a huge step forward.
-
As a counsellor, I continue in my own therapy. Life challenges continue and the listening ear, kindness, compassion and wisdom of a professional external to my life helps me to put struggles into perspective and work a way forward through each storm. I have (and do) benefitted more than I can express.
-
The honour of hearing another's story and then seeing the weight of their concerns lift off their shoulders.

The most significant problem I see in the lives of people is the fear of judgement by other people, exacerbated by social media.
