Philosophy & Vision

Nicole views therapy as a collaborative process built on trust, openness, and mutual respect. Nicole supports clients from the age of 10+ years, and NDIS recipients from 12+ years.

She works alongside clients to help them gain insight, develop coping strategies, and build the confidence needed to move forward. Whether guiding one person to understand emotional regulation and boundary setting, or supporting another to explore, and implement change toward goal setting and happiness, focus remains on fostering awareness and clarity, building resilience, and providing opportunity for personal growth.

At the heart of Nicole's approach is a genuine care for her clients, a deep respect for their experiences, and a belief in each person's ability to create lasting, positive change.

Background

I have worked in health services in varying roles for over 30 years. However, having completed a Ba. Behavioural Studies (Psych) in 2015, I continued to gain experience with volunteer roles with Scouts Victoria, the mental health division of the Office of the Public Advocate, 4Voices (domestic violence support), The Cancer Council, and Little Dreamers (group support for children).

All of these roles provided me with additional experience through individual interactions to understand others, knowledge of where to find support services, how to deliver programs, and an opportunity for further education.

The biggest reward is seeing clients who have struggled, recognise their inner strength and take action toward their preferred future.

    A conversation with Nicole Day

    • I love all aspects of the counselling framework. I gained my first qualification in psychology but found it too heavily based in formal, scientific structure. Whilst counselling and psychotherapy still uses the same concepts of evidence based practice, it is more flexible in assisting clients for their day to day supports.
    • Each concept provides insight in to different areas of our lives and at different times. I find they help make sense of our world and by mixing them helps complement the other, and this supports personal growth. However, I do like phenomenological, narrative, humanistic, and philosophical approaches interesting.
    • I don't have one aspect of health or the human journey that overrides the other. I believe they are all intertwined, and I do believe in the power of choice.
    • I think it's important and meet the client where they are at. It's about the client after all. Taking whatever time is necessary to build rapport, understand the client's beliefs and values, and then work with the client in way that is supportive to them. Sometimes life throws a curve ball midway through our work, but that's ok, we can reassess and develop a new plan to work together. It's about the client being comfortable, heard and respected.
    • That depends on the client. It is important throughout therapy, to acknowledge and reflect on the small thoughts or changes that are occurring. If we only focus on the long term goal, it would be easy to say this isn't working.

Some problems shared in therapy have taken a lifetime to culminate and get to a point where someone is ready to change, so it makes sense that it will take time and patience to re-align beliefs, values, or preferred futures to make these changes. It's important to remain kind to one's self.
    • What a privilege and an honour I have at being able to assist my clients throughout some of their most troubled, dark, confusing, or misunderstood times in their lives. Being able to support and help clients find their smile, set goals, overcome adversity, or whatever they need, provides me with a sense of purpose, and a sense of belonging.
    • I am an empath and helper by nature. Walking at a pace alongside my client in therapy is like a "dance" whereby progress is natural, and assisting the client develop awareness, gain acceptance, improve self-esteem, find their identity, set goals, navigate adversity etc. to a place that provides them with happiness and fulfilment is rewarding.
    • Haha, absolutely! I'm not perfect but I will always get up, throw a hat on if necessary, and say, I'm showing up anyway. The beauty is that even a day where everything seems to go wrong, it will pass, and we can try again tomorrow.
