My therapeutic orientation is an humanistic approach where it uses a non-authoritative approach that allows you to discover your own solutions. 10 Questions with Sarah Harwood

    • What led you to choose psychotherapy or counselling as a profession?

    • Since I was a little girl I have always been the person that people would confide in. When I started teaching music at the age of 16 my students would often talk to me about difficulties at home or school. This inspired me years later to complete a Master of Arts in Counselling, specialising in marriage, children, and families. Since then I have enjoyed helping people discover their strengths to lead contented and fulfilling lives.
    • Which philosophical approaches have influenced your professional/personal development?

    • Person centred Counselling, and Child Centred Play Therapy. Trusting the therapeutic process, and empowering people in their own journey of growth.
    • Which particular aspects of health or the human journey are you interested in?

    • I love the "working phase" of therapy, where clients are doing the work, and they are starting to make sense of their story.
    • What method/s do you use?

    • Provide a safe unconditional non-judgement space. I enjoy using art and sand to help people process their unconscious feelings.
    • When do you think the client will start to feel that progress is being made?

    • Perhaps after the working phase, and they start the mastery stage, where they start implementing strategies into their everyday life and relationships.
    • How has therapy made you a better person?

    • Having my own personal therapy has helped me with my own patterns of relationship. Being a therapist helps me to be a better mother, as I have learnt to be stronger, wiser and kind. Providing psycho education about dysregulation to people helps me understand my own dys-regulation patterns.
    • What do you like most about being a therapist?

    • Listening to the stories, and helping clients make sense of their own story.
    • Do you ever have 'bad hair' days?

    • Absolutely! i am not a perfect therapist, and I am human too!
    • What do you think is the most significant problem we face, in the world today?

    • Secure attachments, and difficulties in relationships, as people are more distracted these days by TV and mobile phones. There is a lack of connection within the family home.
    • Can you share the name of a book, film, song, event or work of art that inspires you?

    • The movie "Christopher Robin"

I believe therapy to be a place in which someone journeys with you through the hard places in life and reflects back to you what they see and experience. I act as witness to your stories as we search for themes, harmful interactions, forms of relating, and places of strength with the hopes of creating a life of deeper healing, connection, and love.
