Philosophy & Vision

I am a Clinical Psychologist who works with children, adolescents and families. My main clinical interests are in the area of complex anxiety, in context of other diagnoses such as ADHD, Autism, learning difficulties, and behavioural concerns. I also see children with sleep and toileting concerns. I strive to provide a therapy environment where children, adolescents and parents/caregivers feel safe to talk about their concerns, and then supported and empowered to work towards their goals.

Background

Amy has worked with children, adolescents and families for over 10 years. She has a particular interest in anxiety disorders. She has worked in private practice for several years, and before this she worked in a specialist university clinic for children with behavioural concerns. Amy has a background in research, completing a PhD in the area of basic empathy development in infants and preschoolers.

    A conversation with Amy Datyner

    • I have always been interested in understanding the 'why' behind behaviour. This led me to study psychology at University. After my undergraduate studies I worked in disability employment services, supporting adults to find meaningful work. I found this work very rewarding and it was exciting to make a difference, so I returned to university to complete my Postgraduate studies. There, I became very interested in developmental psychology and completed my PhD in developmental psychology whilst finishing my Clinical Psychology training.
    • Developmental (attachment), and Systemic
    • I am especially interested in development from early infancy to adolescence. This is a period of huge growth and change not only for children but for their parents/caregivers too.
    • I start by completing a clinical assessment where the child/adolescent attends with their parents/caregiver. This allows me to understand the mental health concerns in the context of their broader family environment. Treatment goals are created in collaboration with the family. Clinical assessment tools (questionnaires) are also used. From there, I use this assessment information to formulate a treatment plan, and select appropriate treatments that are shown to have evidence from research. My primary treatment method is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, however I draw on other modalities such as Parent Management Training, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Positive Behaviour Support, and family systems theory to inform my approach where indicated.
    • My goal is to ensure that the child/adolescent and their parents/caregiver feel understood and heard in the first assessment appointment, and that they have had a chance to formulate some initial treatment goals.
Some clients may experience progress very early on, but for other clients, progress can take time. Therapy is a collaborative process where the psychologist and client work together to bring about change. We will regularly review progress towards clinical goals to ensure that the treatment is working, and make changes as needed.
    • Therapy provides a rich opportunity for self reflection and growth. It is able to hold us during times of intense stress. I value the privilege I have to work alongside families and support them during challenging times.
    • It is immensely rewarding to be a part of a child and family's journey towards better mental health. It is also incredibly fun working with children and adolescents.
    • Yes. Just another human here :)
    • The prioritisation of productivity and economics over core contributors to good mental health (e.g. rest, play, social connectedness, time for enjoyable interests, sense of meaning).
