Philosophy & Vision

Mariyon’s passions of language (BA Hons Lit/Comms) curiosity and empathy joined together when she started on the journey of psychotherapy 15 years ago. ‘What are our underlying motivations?’ is one of key outcomes from her studies. As she learnt more and saw more people struggling in their couples relationships over the last 7 years of treating people, she drew on her 12+ year history of psycho education to help people via practical outcomes. Her relate-able metaphors help people get inside their own heads to assist with getting back out into the world coping with stress, anxiety, job changes or relationship breakdown. Her own experience growing up with a parent with a mental health condition helps her truly comprehend people’s sense of loss of self and compassionately guide them.

Background

My expertise has been gained over multiple sectors, initially as a journalist asking questions which firmed up my belief in that change starts with the attitude we bring to our communication. My multidisciplinary approach stems from having worked with builders/architects on Public Art Projects, teaching leadership at WALGA, chairing Board meetings of volunteers and others' agendas, the imperative of practical applicable education to theory driven psychologists through to facilitating ESL high flyers at AIM courses has contributed to me fully embodying the “head, heart and hand" EI theories along with understanding the internal structural aspects of psychology.

My training including helping people process sexual assaults, severe trauma, homelessness, grief. A conversation with Mariyon Slany

    • I have always liked to understand what makes people tick. Since I was a child I eavesdropped on the adults' conversation to try and make sense of my world and I see psychotherapy as an extension of that. It has taken me a while to get to study psychotherapy (not till my 40's) but being a radio journalist and asking people questions was a step in this direction. Experiencing failure has also been a big part of my motivation; to try and understand what impact that has on my own motivation to do things and how we construct our self image. This has been a big learning in my life and psychotherapy has really helped with this.
    • The study of psychodynamic psychotherapy has been fundamental to my self understanding - it is about words, and language and construction of personality and ego and the unconscious. It is complex and sometimes not always clear about what you are actually studying, but it was hugely illuminating and helped me to really clarify the difference between what we talk about or know intellectually, and what we feel in our body. Recently Polyvagel Theory has continued this learning process for me - really acknowledging that we are feeling creatures before we are thinking creatures.
    • The way our brain operates at an instinctive level and then the construction of self; with thoughts, beliefs, assumptions and desires that seem at odds with that. How people use language to aid or drive them apart in relationships. What role does love play in our lives.
    • This is 'how long is a piece of string' question. It will depend on how courageously we face our own vulnerabilities. But for most people having occasional sessions will not provide long term changes. Like anything worthwhile, we need to make a commitment to uncovering our deepest needs and desires.
    • I started going to therapy in my 20's after my Dad died suddenly which was a hugely traumatic event for me and my family. I also then emotionally supported my mother and this was similar to the role I played with friends, listening to them during relationship breakdowns and other family dramas. The therapy was both good and bad and when I finally had the space to study, this was one of my drivers; to be the best therapist I could be and to leave the space for people to be themselves. I also developed insights after going through a divorce and therapy helped me - to hear my own thoughts, to consider the deeper meanings, to have the courage to unpack previous experiences.
    • It is a privilege to hear about people's inner worlds and for them to trust me to share that.
    • How the lack of self knowledge and self awareness drives our behaviour in often destructive ways - often because of lack of belief or love in ourselves.
    • Dr Helen Fisher's work on love is fascinating. Also Dr Steven Porges 'Our Polyvagal World - how safety and trauma change us' has been eye-opening. Art and literature are constant inspirations in my life!!
