There are many. My Brother and I were hypnotized by a movie called Escape to Witch Mountain as children. I loved the wonder of outer space and special powers being used for good. I love Under a Tuscan Sun because it is a story about hope, healing and joy, but the surprise of how this can occur. It shows that sharing love and care brings joy not just to ourselves, but to those around us. I have read several of Paulo Coelho's books and loved the Alchemist as it shows that what we seek is where we started. I also loved Veronica Decides to Die. It was the first book that I read about mental health and I loved its tender understanding and honoring of Veronica and her feelings.

I'm inspired by anything that pushes me forward in my knowledge and understanding. Specifically, I'm deeply inspired by Brené Brown's work on shame and vulnerability — her research has fundamentally shaped how I hold space for clients' deepest struggles. The DOSE book on neurotransmitters helps me understand the biology of wellbeing and connection. Neuroscience learning — understanding the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex, how threat activates our nervous system — has been transformative for my clinical work. Gabor Maté's trauma work opened my eyes to the profound connection between our early experiences and our physical and emotional health. But perhaps most significantly, Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory and Deb Dana's work bringing it into clinical practice really started opening my eyes to become a more holistic counsellor. Deb Dana's practical application of Polyvagal Theory shifted how I understand the nervous system, vagal tone, and the capacity for genuine regulation and connection. That theory alone changed the trajectory of my counselling practice. What inspires me is the continuous learning — the expanding understanding of how the brain, body, nervous system, and relationships interconnect. Every time I deepen my knowledge, I become a better clinician. Every insight opens new possibilities for how I can help my clients. I'm committed to staying current, to challenging my own assumptions, and to letting new understanding reshape my practice. That commitment to growth and learning is what keeps this work alive and meaningful for me.

There are many works that have inspired me, but one that continues to resonate is Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. His reflections on finding purpose, even in the face of profound suffering, speak deeply to my belief that meaning, choice, and connection are central to the human experience. In a similar vein, I cannot recommend Edith Eger's The Choice enough. Another all-time favourite is Nikos Kazantzakis' Zorba the Greek, about the inner conflict between the Apollo and Dionysian forces within us, the struggle of the mind-intellect versus the body-passion. The book brings this conflict to life through poignant, beautiful, heartfelt poetry and dance. Lastly, one of the books that has followed me through different stages of my life is Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, which essentially describes the journey of the Buddha through the different stations of life, such as a son, disciple, master, hedonist, capitalist, and vagabond, and through realising the constant thread and connection of the flowing river of life.

So many! I admire how other humans can translate such complex, layered emotional experiences into such inspiring, digestible and often entertaining art. The Great Impersonator by Halsey is one of my favourite albums for its raw and expressive depiction of living with chronic illness. It articulates the invisible grief of loosing body capability, managing self-loathing, self-blame and directing anger at the world toward yourself. It is a deeply cathartic listen. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an incredible show in its relatable and often humorous portrayal of mental health, and how easily we can displace unmet emotional needs onto romantic relationships. It speaks to a dynamic many people experience, especially those who grew up romanticising love as a solution to deeper emotional pain of not belonging.

I recently saw the film and read the book Tracks, this is a section I found particularly moving: I reviewed what I had learned. I had discovered capabilities and strengths that I would not have imagined possible in those distant dream like days before the trip. I have rediscovered people in my past and have come to terms with my feelings towards them. I learned what love is... I understand freedom and security. The need to rattle the foundations of habit. That to be free one needs constant and unrelenting vigilance over one's weaknesses. A vigilance which requires a moral energy most of us are incapable of manufacturing. We relax back into the molds of habit. They are secure, they bind us and thus contain us at the expense of freedom. To break the molds, to be heedless of the seductions of security in impossible struggle... is to be free to learn, to test yourself constantly, to gamble. It is not safe. I have learned to use my fears as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks, and best of all I have learned... I want to remember all this. I want to remember this place and what it meant me, and how I had arrived here. I want to fix it so firmly in my mind and body that I will never, ever forget. (Robyn Davidson)

great question.! I am truly inspired by the works of Shakespeare. I make sure I see his plays every year and still learn new things from them even when I have seen them many times over. His understanding of human nature, suffering, emotions and relationships was so deep and his language (even if I have to listen hard to understand !) was so beautiful. I just saw Hamnet, the film inspired by the book about Shakespeare's loss of his son. So beautiful and inspiring and best of all it was focused on the women in the story and written and directed by a woman!

I am inspired by the fluid dreamscapes present in the surrealist movement, namely in the works by Salvador Dali. I have long since admired Dali’s 1944 surrealist piece 'Dream, Caused by the Flight of a Bee (Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening)'. It speaks to some of Dali's ideas on the nature of the subconscious mind, and to the alluring and mystical relationship between dreams and waking reality. I'm a huge reader and love incorporating popular culture references into therapeutic discussions. I've been known to reference Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Batman, Parks and Rec, Mean Girls, The Good Place, and many other books and movies in conversations in therapy (they were appropriate and made sense at the time I promise!).

I find all forms of creativity inspiring, but Caitlin Moran's 'How to be a Woman' popped into my head for its humorous take on how we can beat ourselves up for not meeting the expectations of others. Like the counselling experience, much of what it says could be something you already sense or know, but might not have been able to articulate so clearly, or perhaps needed reminding about. I think it also inspires us to embrace all of the authentic, messy parts of who we are, and even find the joy in them.

Having had the privilege of reading most of his books and listening to countless interviews that he has been a part of, I always try and remind myself of the 'why' instead of the 'what' in my day to day life.
