    10 Questions with Andrew Macdonald

    • What led you to choose psychotherapy or counselling as a profession?

    • I have always been interested in human sciences and the connection between thoughts, feelings and emotions.

I started out volunteering as a counsellor 15 years ago and found I learnt so much about individual stories people bring to the work.
    • Which philosophical approaches have influenced your professional/personal development?

    • I subscribe strongly to elements of a narrative approach. I believe the problem is the problem, rather than the person is the problem, For example, if someone is unhappy with their relationship with alcohol or methamphetamines, I don't see them as an addict, rather someone who has a relationship with something that is impacting them in ways they aren't happy with.

I explore beyond the observable behaviour to help clients make sense of the connection to thoughts and feelings.
    • Which particular aspects of health or the human journey are you interested in?

    • I provide an inclusive practice with particular focus on the LGBTIQA+ community.
    • What method/s do you use?

    • I bring an integrative approach to my work that draws upon person-centred, gestalt, narrative and emotion focussed therapies.
    • When do you think the client will start to feel that progress is being made?

    • That really depends, sometimes after the first session clients can feel a sense of relief from having shared their stories in a trusting confidential environment. Sometimes it takes a little more time to explore deeper issues,.
    • How has therapy made you a better person?

    • We are usually quick to seek help for our physical needs, be it a doctor, dentist or physiotherapist. Seeking support for our emotional and mental needs helps the "all of me" feel stronger and more equipped.
    • What do you like most about being a therapist?

    • Meeting different folks and being privileged to hear their stories and support them in their therapy goals.
    • Do you ever have 'bad hair' days?

    • Sure, you should see my hair some days... Seriously though, nobody is immune to having a bad day. I work hard in my practice to be fully present for my clients and bring a "realness" to my approach.
    • What do you think is the most significant problem we face, in the world today?

    • Stigma and discrimination for the LGBTIQA+ community and other minority groups when seeking health supports.
    • Can you share the name of a book, film, song, event or work of art that inspires you?

    • I have random tastes, so here's a few movies or VOD's I enjoy: Pose and Special particularly inspire me because they challenge the usual stereotypes.
