I have found counselling essential to my wellbeing due to some difficult earlier experiences. I don't see myself as different to anybody else and I think this gives me a real sense of humility and compassion for people who are struggling. I am so grateful to have had some fantastic counsellors and teachers and I see myself in service to others. It is a profound privilege for me to sit with people as they navigate significant challenges.
-
Perhaps the most significant is Narrative Therapy which I spent a year studying. I love this quote “The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem†by Michael White. This is so simple but so profound. The other approaches that have really influenced my work are somatic based and I'm currently studying Somatic Psychotherapy.

I am curious about all aspects of the human journey and health but mostly I am fascinated with how people are so different in how they work with the cards they have been dealt. I continue to be inspired by my clients and learn from each and everyone of them
-
Whatever works for the client. I don't mean to be flippant here but I believe I need to be flexible and skilled enough to meet my clients where they are at, and that means using what fits for them.
I believe the relationship I have with those who work with me is paramount. On top of this, I work in a trauma informed way using Narrative Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Somatic Psychotherapy, Creative Therapies including sand tray, positive psychology. I always work from a strengths focus rather than a deficit, ie whats right with you, not what's wrong with you -
I hope the client will feel that progress has been made in each session. many people feel better after the first session because they have made that first important step, they have a plan and hope.
-
In so many ways, perhaps the most significant is that it has taught me to be self compassionate
-
I love being invited to a client's world and learning about them and what makes them unique. I find people incredibly interesting and inspirational. I love seeing a client's face when they have a major realisation or i watch them standing a little taller, speaking with more confidence, or I hear them tell me about a shift they have made or a 'win'.
-
Of course when its humid!
-
Lack of support in an increasingly complex and stressful world. I don't believe as humans we were designed for how our lives have evolved and our nervous systems are struggling. Our lives have been and are being turned upside by life events and it is hard to maintain balance and equilibrium.

I recently watched Gurrumul - the Gurrumul story and was deeply inspired and moved.
