Philosophy & Vision

Much of what makes us unhappy is unconscious and not easily accessed by rationalisation. I work together with people to explore aspects of their life and their feelings, and learn new ways of overcoming personal difficulties. Managing vulnerabilities, emotions and behaviours can make problems easier to understand. Sometimes only a couple of sessions to achieve self-awareness and problem-solving are needed; others may choose several sessions over an extended period of time.

Background

I have 30 years experience working with people both in health services and the private sector. I work with individuals and couples around issues including relationships, depression, grief/loss anger management, trauma and addiction. I provide trauma support to veterans, first responders and emergency services.

    A conversation with Gabby Skelsey

    • An interest in the resilience of peoples' coping styles and a desire to learn how they have developed over their lifetime.
    • Carl Rogers' humanistic approach based on client centred therapy.
    • Peoples' ability to grow from childhood and lifetime experiences.
    • Client centred humanistic theory informs my practice. I am trained in a variety of treatment models, CBT, psychodynamic, EMDR and so on. Everyone is different and what works for one, will not work for another. Building the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of the work.
    • If the client walks away from the first session with a modicum of hope or relief, that will inform the client as to whether they wish to continue seeing me, or to look again.
    • Therapy has informed me, not necessarily to be a better person, but to learn from clients, invest in keeping up with current trends and emerging theories and to look after my own mental health.
    • Hearing stories of peoples' strengths to cope with life circumstances.
    • Everyone does.
    • Despair and anxiety that the world is changing and how little control as individuals, we have.
    • The book: Life After Life by Kate Atkinson because it demonstrates the fragility of life events.
