We all feel the deep longing to become happier, wiser and better human beings, but that sometimes we are overwhelmed by challenges and difficulties; our best intentions can get swamped by echoes of the past, hard choices and difficult circumstances. Good therapy can help you through those hard times and help you build a strong sense of self, one closer to the person you long to be.

    10 Questions with Tim Hill

    • What led you to choose psychotherapy or counselling as a profession?

    • I chose to become a psychotherapist through my own experience of receiving psychotherapy. It was a fascinating process, unlike anything else I had done before, and it changed my life.
    • Which philosophical approaches have influenced your professional/personal development?

    • I have developed my own philosophical approach that combines various elements, such as support, personal responsibility and empathy. I believe that we have the strength to follow our own directions, but often need some support to do this.
    • Which particular aspects of health or the human journey are you interested in?

    • My fascination is with how we form our self, how this process can get off the rails and what we can do about bringing ourselves back together again.
    • What method/s do you use?

    • When working with clients I use empathy to help clients to both better understand themselves and allow the self to gradually re-cohere, but also a way of expressing my care. I feel the unconscious is an important part of who we are, and this approach allows it to play its part in change.
    • When do you think the client will start to feel that progress is being made?

    • In my experience, people often feel a sense of hopefulness that they are finally on the right track after our initial consultation. They often report feeling a little better by the time we start our second session.
    • How has therapy made you a better person?

    • Therapy made it possible for me to be who I am and really love.
    • What do you like most about being a therapist?

    • It is a chance for people to unlock themselves and become the person that they always knew was there.
    • Do you ever have 'bad hair' days?

    • Just like everyone else. However, I know what I need to do to take care of myself and quite quickly restore my equilibrium.
    • What do you think is the most significant problem we face, in the world today?

    • Devaluation and disregard by other people leaves us feeling alone and insignificant.
    • Can you share the name of a book, film, song, event or work of art that inspires you?

    • I find inspiration everywhere, particularly in stories of struggle against adversity and the power of compassion of other people.
