Philosophy & Vision

As a registered practising psychoanalyst (ACP) I work with the deep sources of distress and dissatisfaction. These can be felt as a state such as depression or anxiety, or manifest as a sense of hopelessness or an endless struggle to think well of oneself. Psychoanalysis is a way such unhappiness and its more troubling mental triggers can be treated. It happens by speaking in a way that actual subjectivity is discovered, freeing up the individual to explore hitherto hidden sources of creativity.

Background

My experience covers more than 25 years of study and clinical work in the psychoanalytic field. Training began in the UK, where I did a masters degree in Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology at the University of London. This was followed by a four year training with the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis (ACP) and a doctorate in Psychological Medicine at Monash University. Along the way I have participated in specific Lacanian training in Paris. Clinical work has ranged from agency consulting at centres such as St John of God in Ballarat, to private work with patients seeking a personal analysis. As well, I teach psychoanalysis and have written widely in the field.

Services

  • Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis, Clinical Supervision, Phone Consultations, Online Video Consultations
  • As a clinical practice, psychoanalysis works through talking in a manner that produces truthful knowledge. By analysing symptoms and problems the patient and the analyst come to understand the unconscious conflicts which cause and maintain the suffering. Working together, analyst and patient bring to consciousness the unconscious subjective truths which previously produced unhappiness and crippling symptoms, but once revealed offer the possibility of new choices and creative change.

    Quality Provision

My training has covered more than a decade of theoretical and practical work, with lengthy personal analysis and one to one supervision by qualified analysts working within the umbrella of the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis. The work is primarily an ethical undertaking with a competence guarantee arising from the particular training and preparation. The singular needs of the patient are kept to the fore in this praxis in which the actual desire of the person presenting is paramount.

    Therapy Approach

I work within the field established by Sigmund Freud and refined by Jacques Lacan. This is a psychoanalytic orientation that puts the symptom at the heart of the praxis and considers the unconscious forces at work in pathology. The work is ethical in that it seeks the independent desire of the patient, not an identification with the analyst. It takes into account the suffering caused by the symptom, but in an indirect way by deciphering the signifiers involved in an individual's formation.
