Philosophy & Vision

I am a Counsellor who is also engaged in ongoing studies in Psychology. I have enjoyed the opportunity to study both, through an interdisciplinary pathway that supports a more holistic therapy approach. I am interested in applying my experience in overseas disaster management and humanitarian response to psychological crisis management.

While crisis management can encompass any life challenge such as grief, relationship break down and existential crisis, I am also interested in offering psychological support related to climate change concern and post disaster support. I am a member of the Australian Counselling Association and I am qualified to provide psychosocial first aid with the Australian Red Cross.

In addition to working in private practice I am also a youth access clinician for headspace, an organisation that helps young people, under 25, to be mentally healthy in their communities.

Background

I previously worked in the not for profit sector managing overseas development and humanitarian aid programs. Recognition of the unfulfilled need for psychosocial and psychological support in crisis settings led me to the path of psychology and counselling.

While I have a private practice in Coffs Harbour, I also work at headspace in Coffs harbour as a Youth Action Clinician; headspace is Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation which means that I see young clients between the ages of 12-25 who are seeking support for mental health concerns.

    A conversation with Laura Bruce

    • I keep circling back to Psychology as I did it in my undergrad over 20 years ago. I had to start from the beginning again many years later but I was glad for the opportunity as the field is evolving so rapidly. I previously worked for NGOs in humanitarian response and recognised the unmet needs to address the impact of trauma on individuals as a result of conflict and disasters.
    • Exploring the unconscious fascinates me.
    • I am interested in a holistic approach. I am currently drawn to some of the more somatic therapies and how trauma is held in the body.
    • Active listening and grounding
    • Progress depends on so many different factors and looks different for each individual but if I can support the client through validation and unconditional positive regard just a few sessions will provide comfort.
