Philosophy & Vision

I work primarily with adult men, supporting them to better understand themselves, navigate life’s challenges, and live more connected, values-driven lives. Many have been taught that emotional expression is weakness and that worth is tied to toughness or performance—beliefs that can lead to disconnection, anxiety, and frustration. I help men develop new ways of relating to their thoughts, emotions, and relationships—without losing the strengths they value. My approach emphasises authenticity, emotional safety, and collaboration. I see therapy as a shared process of discovery, grounded in honesty, humour, and human connection.

Background

I have experience providing counselling to individuals (12+), couples, and families across a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, addiction, suicidal ideation and self-harm, trauma, eating disorders, motivation, identity, and social skills. I support couples with issues such as communication difficulties, trust, infidelity, and substance use, and work with families around attachment, grief, cultural tension, sibling or parent-child conflict, and building resilience. I’ve also facilitated group therapy programs drawing on CBT, DBT, and ACT frameworks to support skill development and emotional wellbeing in both adolescents and adults.

Services

  • Counselling, Couples Therapy, Online Video Consultations
  • I specialise in men’s mental health, helping adult men navigate challenges such as anxiety, low mood, relationship issues, identity, and emotional regulation. I draw on evidence-based approaches like CBT and ACT to support lasting change, focusing on building insight, psychological flexibility, and practical strategies for everyday life. My approach is collaborative and grounded in real-world outcomes. I also integrate data and visual tools to help map progress and identify underlying patterns and improve effectiveness and lasting change.

    Therapy Approach

My approach is grounded in evidence-based therapies, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). ACT helps clients build psychological flexibility—learning to sit with difficult thoughts and feelings while taking meaningful action in line with their values. CBT supports skill-building and practical strategies to shift unhelpful thinking patterns. Together, these approaches help clients create lasting change, with a focus on insight, emotional resilience, and purposeful living.

    A conversation with Travis Grogan

    • I think that "helping others" is a great motivator for an occupation. Although I only help in a very small way, there is never a day when I think my day has been a waste. (I previously worked in a bank and I thought/felt this way often). There are many ways to help obviously, but this one works for me.
    • I have been mostly influenced by stoicism, mostly that of Markus Aurelius and his meditations. I also have been influenced by humanistic psychology, I find the actualisation of people's life a worthwhile pursuit.
    • I like to see how adaptable people are, as they progressively build skills to manage their world, then use those skills to expand their world, which then needs new skills. I like seeing this process in action and being humbled by it.
    • I mainly use ACT and CBT.
    • I like to highlight procedural change with my clients, so clients tend to improve their energy to reflect on their life quite quickly once therapy begins. Of course, this is only a preliminary stage relative to practically change, but a rolling stone gathers moss.
    • I test out every intervention on myself first (my wife gets frustrated when I practice communication skills with her :)). The array of people and their stories that I get to listen to broadens my understanding of the complexity of humans, and that's a really beautiful part of my job.
    • Adding something small of value to a person's life that can have large positive effects. I think therapy has high "pay it forward" value.
    • Occasionally (but I keep my hair short so it's fairly simple). Most recently, I had a bad hair day for my wedding (a few months back). I normally cut my own hair (short back and sides) but for my wedding cut, I got it professionally done, and it was a nightmare.
    • Big question. For me, we are building a world where consumption volume is aggressively high. In that pursuit, we are struggling to dedicate significant time to what helps humans feel good and think well. Despite many technological advancements in the last 100 years, we have not earned more time, so we have little time for the things that make us feel whole, full, and settled.
    • I really liked the movie "Perfect Days" by Wim Wenders. It says to me "there is beauty in the world no matter what, provided we learn how to see it".
