Philosophy & Vision

I am a psychiatrist: a medical practitioner with specialist qualifications in mental health. I have a particular interest in providing long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This approach considers the role of early childhood experience, trauma, and the unconscious mind in a range of difficulties such as mood, relationships and identity. The goal of therapy is to facilitate self-knowledge that enables personal transformation. My services are eligible for Medicare rebates with a GP referral.

Background

I have been working in mental health for 18 years. I have worked in a variety of settings, including inpatient and outpatient mental health services, and at a Headspace youth service.
On completing my psychiatry specialty training I pursued additional training in long-term psychotherapy.
I have been working as a psychotherapist for 10 years.

Services

  • Psychotherapy
  • I work with patients in an open-ended and relatively non-directive manner. Many of my patients have sought therapy to help them negotiate periods of transition in life, or to address particular issues holding them back, including:
    * addressing the impact of past traumatic events on their emotions and identity
    * developing better ways of relating to others without negative expectations
    * overcoming inhibitions and becoming able to express themselves
    * freeing themselves from self-doubts and self-criticism
    * developing new capabilities and being able to take on new life roles
    * moving past regrets and disappointments
    * managing feelings of disconnection and dissociation

    Quality Provision

I am registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
I am engaged in ongoing professional development including participating in formal training courses, workshops, conference and lectures, and am engaged in professional supervision.

    Therapy Approach

My approach is informed by a variety of different theoretical frameworks, but I am primarily guided by psychoanalytic techniques and the theories of Jung.
One of the essential theoretical stances of analytic approaches is the concept of the mind as having both conscious and unconscious elements. Much of the way we think, feel and respond to others and to events has been shaped by early experience, and subsequently rehearsed to the point that it operates as an automatic response.
Therapy Involves intense self-examination, to come to know and understand the ways we think and feel that are harmful or counterproductive. In essence it is to make the unconscious known to the conscious mind, including through use of art, story or other symbols.
