Philosophy & Vision

Intimate relationships are attachment bonds. Distressed relationships have insecure bonds. Couple's therapy addresses the security of the bond and the couple’s ability to be engaged, accessible and responsive to each other. A pre-requisite for getting the most out of couple therapy is the willingness to bring the best version of yourself forward when your partner disappoints or hurts you. It doesn’t work to come to therapy with the belief that your partner is the one that has to change. Some couples have so developed the blame game, that it is carefully hidden under layers of hurt and shame. My web site describes how I work. It is at http://ziji.life

Background

50 years Clinical, Relationship & Health Psychology working with childhood and adult loss and trauma; providing couple, family and evidence based trauma therapy.

I survived a childhood of mixed blessings. Orphaned at birth; then fostered; reclaimed at 8 years of age by my biological father, a complete stranger. I became a parentified child, in the sense of being his companion and carer. Later isolated and alone at 13 years of age groomed and abused by a pedophile school head master in Hobart. As a result developing complex PTSD. Despite all of that I have had a wonderful life, am in good health and happily married. I am a poet and a painter and my work can be found @zijiartpoems and on my art website landscapeoftheheart.com

Services

  • Couples Therapy
  • After 50 years working for psychological intimacy I have become exclusively, a couples therapist. I came to realise how few of the issues presented to counsellors/therapists are not better assisted and producing more robust changes when a significant other also attends. The research now confirms it. None more importantly than couple and family issues where an individual therapy may be harmful to the relationship. Not surprisingly this is also true of depression and anxiety.

    Therapy Approach

'Our attachments are so powerful that our brains code them as safety. Any perceived distance or separation in our close relationships is interpreted as danger because losing the connection to a loved one jeopardises our sense of security. Secure attachment soothes and comforts; offers a safe haven; promotes trust in self and other and openness to new experiences, risk taking and experimenting. It promotes affect regulation and integration.' Sue Johnson
