A conversation with Nerine Strachan

I noticed a natural ability to converse with, and understand others. People seem to trust me very quickly and open up, naturally feeling safe in my presence. This combined with personal challenging experiences, led me to study counselling. This study was not only theoretical but a process of self discovery, which developed my natural abilities further so that I can effectively help others through the therapeutic relationship.

Mindfulness, buddhist philosophy, the conversational model and trauma informed practice.

I take a holistic perspective, that no aspect of an individuals life can be looked at separate from the whole, which includes the entirety of their experience, history, family, social circles, world view etc. My guiding belief is that all people have the potential for self-realisation and inherent capacity for growth and development at any stage of their lifespan.
-
All methods that I use are based within the framework of the Conversational Model, a psychodynamic interpersonal model of therapy. Within this framework, I utilise mindfulness, trauma informed phase work, person centred, cognitive behavioural techniques, Acceptance and commitment therapy techniques, schema therapy. All techniques are evaluated based on what happens next in therapy. If the technique fosters connection in relationship, staying near to the clients experience the intervention can be deemed therapeutically appropriate.

I take a longer term approach as I believe long term issues take longer to effect long term change.
However, I expect that clients will be begin to feel that progress is being made within a few months of consistent therapy. In addition to this the client will feel better from the very first session when they get an experience of being heard and validated. It is often remarked by my clients that they feel very understood, this is sometimes the very first time they have experienced someone who listens and understands. This feeling is often enough to have clients develop hope, facilitating an increase in wellbeing. -
I understand myself better, however it is always an ongoing process. Self development is a life long journey. I have become more self-compassionate, thus this has facilitated my ability to offer compassion to others. I am more able to set boundaries and speak up for myself. I have also developed more confidence to follow my dreams knowing that I can and do find ways of adapting to whatever comes my way.

Helping others see their own potential and begin implementing this in their own lives.
-
yes everyone does, but as a therapist your focus is always the clients wellbeing.

There are too many to mention, I think the modern world can be a really difficult place to exist. I think western society needs to start valuing stillness, less is more, feelings rather than cognition, the simple things. It is the over complication, busyness, always wanting more... a real lack of contentment in the present moment that contributes to a great deal of suffering in the world.
-
My yoga practice continues to inspire me. Every time I get on the mat I open further to the possibilities within my own life and the world.
