Philosophy & Vision

When life becomes overwhelming, relationships challenging, and situations confusing, counselling can offer a safe and supportive context in which you can reflect on it all. It can be a safe place for your questions, fears, hopes, and your wants as you determine your way forward. We work together to find what is useful and meaningful for you from the experience of counselling. I am based in Sydney's Inner West in Stanmore.

My unique blend of existentially oriented approach and background in psychology allows clients to experience counselling that is deeply personal to their concerns, and begins with the client's experience and understanding of the problem.

While existential philosophy underpins my thinking, I approach issues from a feminist framework, and social and political realities prioritising justice, equality, and diversity.

Background

I have over 19 years' experience in providing counselling, psychotherapy and psychological services to adolescents, adults, and families with concerns of depression, anxiety, addiction, relationships, chronic or acute experience of trauma, life transitions, bereavement and existential concerns.

I am an experienced Lecturer in Counselling and workshop facilitator for professionals in the industry, as well as clients with specific concerns. I am a clinical supervisor and a Principal Supervisor for Psychologists completing their registration.

    Therapy Approach

I am committed to your growth and therapeutic process.

I value your experiences and the meaning you make of them. This is central to the therapeutic work. I do not interpret your experience for you, or take your experience from you.
I believe that the therapeutic space is an opportunity to explore and experiment, so that you may begin to use it outside of the therapeutic space: in your relationships, your work, and in life.

I work from the Existential Framework of therapy and use various modalities as appropriate for your needs: CBT, Mindfulness, ACT, Interpersonal therapy, Emotional focusing, Focusing, Solution focused, Motivational Interviewing, or EMDR.

    A conversation with Maya Floyd

    • When I was 11 years old, I came across a Medical Psychiatry textbook. I read about a man with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and became deeply interested in psychology from that moment. As I read and studied, I realised that I was more interested in understanding human beings and connecting with them through understanding experience, and how we make sense of our lives.
    • I am mainly influenced by the existential and humanistic philosophy in my approach.
    • I think progress begins to be possible when we feel a sense of confusion, or fear over losing control of our selves, or our carefully-structured lives. In some ways, when we come to therapy we are already there - on precipice of change. We begin to feel like progress is being made, or perhaps we begin to trust that progress is being made, when we can sense or imagine a way forward, through the confusion, out of the fog, towards something that feels doable and right. It is not a pleasant process, but it is an inevitable one for a meaningful life.
    • Yes, and I hope you tell me about them!
    • A complex interplay of post-colonial and neo-liberal values and behaviours, that were always going to lead us here. We have now entered the age of what I call (and elsewhere has been called) 'human fracking' - the humans as the last resource for capitalist extraction practices. Our attention is being mined, our natural survival instinct for connection is being monetised for an alienating future, and our home decimated in the name of profit. The revolution is partly an inner one, in disconnecting from the 'mirror world' and finding each other in person, here, and now.
