Philosophy & Vision

I'm a Relationship Counsellor and Sex Therapist.
It's my experience that couples experiencing relationship difficulties often need help dealing with sexual issues as they often go hand in hand. Over the last decade I have combined skills in both areas to help couples and individuals move past sex challenges. and restore fun, intimacy and respect in their relationships.

Background

Originally from The Netherlands, I have lived in Australia for over 40 years. My cultural background has made me a very open minded and approachable person and my clients describe me as 'easy to talk to'.

Over the years I have worked in a range of professional fields, which has provided me with the ability to communicate and build rapport with individuals from various cultures. Furthermore, from living in different places around the globe, I have acquired a depth of life experiences which complement my counselling skills.

I'm an ASSERT NSW accredited relationship counsellor and sex therapist, and I am the author of SEX Down Under.

    A conversation with Matty Silver

    • After being a volunteer Life Line telephone counsellor for many years, I decided to start the ACAP counselling course. My first and second internship was with Impotence Australia - a telephone service in Surry Hills.
This started my interest in Sex Therapy and I decided to attain the Master of Health Science (Sexual Health) at the University of Sydney.
This started my career as a Sex Therapist and Relationship Counsellor.
    • Coming from an open-minded society (The Netherlands) which view sex as a normal part of life, I realised that Australians view sex very differently to the way I did and it saddened me that there is such a taboo around sex.

I started writing articles for the on-line Fairfax papers and later on The Huffington Post. Based on the articles, I have written a book called SEX Down Under - Information, insights and sex education for grown ups. The book deals in short chapters, with many of the issues I encounter in my counselling room, with the aim to help the reader understand that most of these issues are commonly experienced and can be resolved.
    • I like to break down and demystify some of the taboos and barriers around sex and encourage people to feel more comfortable talking about it.
    • Most important with Sex Therapy is to take a very detailed sexual history, especially with males.
I find out out what their 'issue' is - when 'things' were good and when they changed.

When I see a couple, I again find out what the main issue is. I see them separately for a short confidential session - then they come back together again.

I use the solution focussed method which means giving advice and support.
    • Most of my clients feel progress is made within weeks.
    • The feed back I receive.
    • No, not really.
