Philosophy & Vision
I work with people who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, or who seek to explore more existential and/or philosophical matters. I regard therapy as an opportunity to check in with one's inner self. That is, I offer a confidential space in which patients can reflect on the people, objects, histories and relationships that influence them, and encourage the learning and emotional insight that will assist in knowing ourselves better.
Background
I achieved a Master of Organisational Psychology at Griffith University in 2021. My thesis for this degree analysed the experiences of frontline social workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, I went into a group psychology practice, and from there into private practice, where I have been ever since. Prior to this, I worked as an English teacher, both here in Brisbane and abroad.

I think it's fair to say that this profession is a calling first and a choice second; it certainly feels as if that's how it's unfolded for me. Having been on the receiving end of some excellent intervention and care in my early 20s by some outstanding therapists, it kindled a desire that had been ticking away in my own unconscious to train and practice in psychology. It's amazing to reflect on this process, because for years I had told myself I couldn't do it, and then once I had emerged from running with this narrative, there was nothing that could hold me back.
Ultimately, it was the opportunity to work in a field that attempts to engage with our inner-most selves which drew me to this profession. I love the fact that in therapy, we are invited to be our truest self, even if it is only for an hour at a time to begin with.
In following this passion, I felt I'd be able to give back something of what I had learnt - both academically and more broadly. By the same token, I knew that my own learning in this fascinating field would never stop.

I predominantly use a psychodynamic approach in therapy. Much has been written about this, and it can be characterised in many ways.
In practice, it simply looks like two people having a conversation, with certain areas of focus within the exchange. These include one's emotional experiences and interpersonal life, their attempts to avoid difficult things in life, their early developmental influences, their dreams and wishes, and the recurrence of themes. One of the premises of this method is to bring unconscious influences to light, so that the patient is aware of them, and less likely to be pushed and pulled around by them. -
It's very hard to put a date on this, as it occurs at different rates for different people. I've had patients report that they started feeling better once they made the initial appointment, as if anticipating the potential for change and taking positive action around this acts as a kind of catalyst for change itself. Others take longer. There are a variety of reasons for this, including motivation, the presenting issue(s), and the frequency of sessions.

The destruction of natural habitats springs to mind. A lot of material things can be replaced, but the natural world doesn't come with this expendability. It saddens me to think of how many animals have been driven to extinction and how much rainforest has been lost during my lifetime alone.
