A conversation with Julia McKenzie Palmer

    • For some of us it is a calling. Not where we purposefully started but where we find ourselves.
    • There is wisdom and insight in many approaches so I would have to describe myself as eclectic. At a personal level though I'm glad Carl Jung walked the road before me.
    • I think I am open to all aspects. It's hard to pinpoint one or even a few.
    • I am eclectic - I draw across a range of methods including CBT, mindfulness, Gestalt, EMDR to name a few.
    • Most of my clients feel this after the first session. It is a big step to begin & so there is often a feeling of relief as they unload the burden they have been carrying.
    • Good question. I think therapy has given me the opportunity to reflect & reconnect with myself. In this fast paced world it's easy to lose connection with ourselves & those we love
    • In amidst the seriousness - finding and sharing laughter with my clients. Also the moment when we both agree that all is well in their world & it's time to say farewell.
    • Like who doesn't? Also explains why I don't see clients on Mondays.
    • Fast, fast, fast! Now, now now!! Money, money, money!!! Big, big, big!!!! Not to mention 24/7 availability & social media. All of this can create the pressure to be it all to everyone & yet often results in disconnection from ourselves & our family & friends. I see this manifested in my clients as anxiety & depression & a loss of self esteem & meaning. Alienation from ourselves & others & the loss of meaning will I think grow as a problem unless we redress the imbalances in our lives.
    • A song that makes you smile & builds self-esteem has got to be good right? And so the song that does this for me is an ol' country & western one. You may know it.

"Oh Lord it's hard to be humble when I'm perfect in every way. I can't help but look in the mirror, I get better looking each day. To know me is to love me I must be one helluva man (gal). Oh Lord it's hard to be humble but I'm doin' the best that I can."

Always brings a smile to my face & I definitely feel better when I sing it. Give it a try some time.
