Philosophy & Vision

Calum is passionate about mental health, personal growth, and development. Calum holds a wealth of experience, from over a decade of experience across private and public mental health settings.

He is experienced in working with children and adults across a wide range of presentations including: Trauma, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, Relationship difficulties, Grief and Loss.

He is trained in a variety of therapeutic modalities including Schema Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Family Systems Theory. Calum believes that no individual is the same and each requires a tailored approach, so generally, a blend of approaches and therapies are utilised for each individual.

Background

Calum has over a decade of experience working in Mental Health across specialist community and inpatient public health settings. Calum's recent experience has been working with children, youth, and families both here in Sydney and in the United Kingdom. Here he built advanced skills in assessment, risk management, and the treatment of complex and enduring mental health difficulties. Most recently, he was serving as a clinical leader and senior clinician in the youth mental health space, providing treatment, but also delivering workshops, talks, and supervision to other mental health staff.

Services

  • Counselling, Family Therapy, Assessment, Home Visits, Walk and Talk Therapy, Coaching / Mentoring, Workshops / Courses, Professional Training, Educational Resources, Clinical Supervision, Phone Consultations, Online Video Consultations
  • Calum provides online and in person individual therapy sessions for teens, young adults, and adults. He also provides therapy sessions for children (under 13) which are in-person only and require parental attendance as part of the work.

Calum also provides parent-only coaching where young people are not willing or motivated to attend. In his experience, parents working on their approach and reflecting on their parenting can have a knock-on effect for everyone in the family.

Calum also provides Family Therapy with more than one member in sessions at the same time.

Calum is also an experienced supervisor and offers supervision online and in-person.

    Therapy Approach

Calum's early career was spent training and delivering therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Schema Therapy. Calum also utilises Mindfulness-based techniques and Psychoneuroimmunologically-informed techniques as part of this therapeutic approach. Most recently, Calum has/is continuing to undertake training in Bowen Family System's theory and applies this therapeutically.

Calum recognises the importance of evidence-based therapy, but prefers to use an integrative approach, rather than stick rigidly to one modality. He believes that everyone is a unique individual, therefore, they require a customised approach.

    A conversation with Calum Johal

    • I'm a music-man at heart. Musically, there are too many songs/musicians too mention but Fleetwood Mac, Nas, and The Stone Roses are some of my favourites.

My favourite books are: The Idiot by Dostoyevsky and The Stranger by Albert Camus.
