Philosophy & Vision

It is important to me that I build a professional and strong therapeutic relationship with my clients. That during therapy I utilise a wide range of treatment interventions available to me due to my post graduate training. Involving my clients in decisions concerning the treatment they wish to receive and the formation of their therapy goals is also important to me. Lastly, when working with children and individuals diagnosed with a disability working creatively is essential.

Background

My experience providing children and youth with counselling at Centrecare, Minnawarra House and YMCA means that I have experience counselling children and youth for a range of issues. Such as trauma, i.e. Domestic Violence, neglect, anger management, relationship conflict, suicidal ideation, anxiety, parental separation, depression to name a few. Children accessing my therapy services can expect to be provided with play therapy, sand tray, art and music therapy, as well as traditional counselling. Adults accessing my counselling services have sought therapy for issues such as traumatic relationships, grief, anxiety, stress management, depression, relationship conflict at work and home, and relationship breakdown to name a few.

    Therapy Approach

Whilst my approach involves working creatively with a client to meet their therapy goals the client has the right to choose whether or not he or she engages in expressive therapy during the session. No skills or experience are required of the client to create music or art. Each and every counselling session involves traditional counselling techniques and interventions also. For this reason a wide range of approaches are used such as interpersonal therapy, mindfulness, narrative and gestalt therapy. Fostering a working alliance with my clients is important to me, as is the strength of the therapeutic relationship, clients comment that they build rapport with me easily and feel very comfortable during sessions.

    A conversation with Bridie Fitzgerald

    • Years spent working as a music therapist working with clients who had a range of issues, I found that I was constantly required to adapt to my clients needs and take on new challenges to help them reach their therapy goals. This lead to a natural transition into psychotherapy and counselling as helping others gain insight into their issues and my own personal journey along the way has always been important to me.
