Good Therapy Australia

Sometimes the hardest part isn't deciding what to do. It's making sense of what's happening.

Philosophy & Vision

I work with people navigating uncertainty, grief/loss, major life decisions, or periods where life simply feels stuck.

They often come to me because they are going over the same thoughts repeatedly, feeling pulled in different directions, or trying to make sense of a loss, change, or life event that has shaken their sense of certainty or direction.

Whilst there is often a temptation to search for quick answers, lasting progress usually begins with gaining clarity, recognising patterns, and understanding what truly matters.

I help by slowing things down and making sense of what's happening. I provide a space to untangle your thoughts, gain clarity, and move forward with greater confidence and direction.

And if I don’t help, you don’t pay.

Background

Throughout my career, I have worked in education, community volunteering, and counselling. Although these roles have been quite different, a common thread has been helping people make sense of situations that feel confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to navigate.

These experiences have included teaching, suicide prevention volunteering, and counselling in both private practice and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) settings. Together, they have reinforced my belief that meaningful change rarely comes from quick answers. More often, it begins with gaining clarity, recognising patterns, and understanding what truly matters.

Services

  • Counselling, Phone Consultations, Online Video Consultations
  • Many people come to counselling feeling overwhelmed by competing thoughts, emotions, or decisions. They are often unsure where to begin, or worried that they should already have the answers.

The first step is simply to explore what is happening and make sense of it together. There is no pressure to arrive with a clear goal or a perfectly explained problem. Counselling provides a space to slow down, reflect, and gain perspective on what matters most.

All sessions are conducted online via secure video (or telephone call if preferred), allowing you to access counselling from anywhere in Australia. Many clients appreciate the privacy, convenience, and flexibility of being able to attend sessions from their own home.

    Quality Provision

Counselling is an investment of both time and money. I believe you should feel that our work together has provided genuine value.

If you do not find our session helpful, simply let me know within 24 hours and I will refund the full fee.

My aim is to provide a service that is genuinely useful, not to charge for sessions that haven't helped.

    Therapy Approach

My approach is collaborative, reflective, and practical. I believe that understanding often precedes meaningful change. Rather than rushing to solutions or assuming there is a quick fix, I work with clients to explore what is happening, recognise patterns, and gain clarity about what matters most.

I aim to provide a calm, non-judgemental space where people can think clearly about difficult situations, make sense of competing thoughts and emotions, and consider possible ways forward. Rather than telling clients what they should do, I help them develop their own understanding and confidence in the decisions they make.

Every client is different, so sessions are tailored to individual needs, strengths, values, and circumstances.

    A conversation with Barry Medwell

    • I am particularly interested in how people navigate uncertainty, loss, major life transitions, and periods where life feels stuck or difficult to understand.

I am also interested in helping people stay psychologically healthy, not just helping them recover after becoming psychologically unhealthy. Many of the challenges we face in life do not require quick fixes, but rather the opportunity to reflect, gain perspective, and make decisions that align with what matters most.

More broadly, I am fascinated by how people make sense of their experiences and create meaningful lives in the face of change, complexity, and uncertainty.
    • Progress looks different for different people, but it often begins earlier than many expect.

For some, it starts when they feel genuinely heard and understood. For others, it begins when they gain a clearer perspective on a situation, recognise a pattern they hadn't noticed before, or find themselves feeling less overwhelmed by thoughts and emotions that previously seemed tangled or confusing.

Whilst meaningful change takes time, these moments of increased clarity often provide the foundation for greater confidence, better decisions, and lasting progress.
    • One of the most significant challenges we face today is disconnection.

Despite being more connected technologically than ever before, many people feel increasingly disconnected from themselves, from one another, and from what gives their lives meaning and direction.

I see this reflected in many of the struggles people bring to counselling — loneliness, uncertainty, overwhelm, conflict, and a sense of feeling lost or stuck. Whilst technology and social change have brought many benefits, I believe there remains a deep human need for genuine connection, understanding, and belonging.

For me, many of the things that support psychological wellbeing ultimately involve reconnecting: with ourselves, with other people, and with what matters most.
