I am passionate about supporting people to reclaim their lives and relationships from the effects of problems. I enjoy meeting with a diversity of people, who each bring their hopes and dreams about what is important in life. Sometimes problems limit the ideas that are available to individuals, partners and families. It is my hope that in exploring these problems together, new solutions will emerge. Often these are linked to the values, history and knowledge of the people I am meeting with.

    Narrative Therapy

    Since 2004 I have been using narrative therapy as my preferred counselling method, as it is encountered by people as being very respectful, and helpful. I have a Masters Degree in Narrative Therapy and Community Work. I also have experience with mindfulness practices.

      Quality Provision

      I am a member of a professional association (PACFA), and attend regular professional training. I am committed to hearing from the people I meet with about what works best for them, and receiving feedback as to how the sessions are going. I am also engaged in regular clinical supervision and self-reflection.

      Background

      I have worked with people experiencing relationship issues, parenting concerns, complex trauma, mental health concerns and drug and alcohol issues since 1999. I have also worked in disability services. I am keen to meet with adults, children, adolescents.

      I am also an experienced clinical supervisor for counsellors, mental health professionals, and group workers.

      Appointments

      Office appointments are available on Monday afternoons and evenings. Phone and Skype consultations are available on other days.

      Transport and Parking

      St Leonards train station is approximately 10 mins walk. Hume St Carpark and Holtermann St Carpark offer two hours free parking.

      Fees

      Fees are $140 for one hour. Skype or phone consultations are $120. Concessions are available for low income households and those on government payments. First session is free when you book and pay for a second session.

      10 Questions with Loretta Pederson

      • What led you to choose psychotherapy or counselling as a profession?

      • Connecting with people and offering care has been important to me since I was quite young. I am also interested in finding ways to address injustice, and see my professional and volunteer work as part of living out this commitment.
      • Which philosophical approaches have influenced your professional/personal development?

      • I practice Narrative Therapy, which is influenced by post-structural and feminist ideas. I am also interested in queer theory. These philosophies support me to really listen to each person's unique experience, without being bound by expectations of how people 'should' live, or 'should' respond to the difficulties they encounter. This leads to a vibrant exploration of people's preferred ways of being.
      • Which particular aspects of health or the human journey are you interested in?

      • I endeavour to walk alongside people no matter what part of the journey they are on. I am interested in hearing about the context of people's lives, as I believe that the problems we experience in life are generated in relationship with society and the expectations and limitations which are placed on us. In collaboratively considering the context of people's lives and the stories they hold about themselves and others, I hope to support people to make choices in line with their values, hopes and dreams.
      • What method/s do you use?

      • I primarily use Narrative Therapy, which mainly involves listening to the person's story, and asking respectful questions. At times people may choose to draw or share music from their playlist to express themselves, when words don't come easily. Some people find mindfulness techniques useful, for example in calming themselves during a panic attack, or reducing stress in life. My interest is in exploring the skills and ideas that the person rates as most useful, and which fit for their own context.
      • When do you think the client will start to feel that progress is being made?

      • Most people report feeling a sense of comfort and connection during the first session, and renewed sense of hopefulness. We explore together their hopes for life and for relationships. This gives us a good guide to check in with during sessions to review progress. Some people find they only need 4 - 6 sessions, whereas others engage in the therapeutic process for 8 - 10 sessions or longer. It varies from person to person, depending on the complexity of the situation and the supports they have in place. Building support can be one of the things we work on. Whatever the situation, I am keen to hear feedback from my clients to ensure we stay on track.
      • How has therapy made you a better person?

      • I attended counselling myself and found it very useful to support me in navigating life's challenges. It was helpful to focus on the steps I was taking to address my concerns, and also collaboratively come up with next steps. Having a safe place to speak without being judged was the most valuable aspect. Reflecting on all of this has made me a better partner, parent, friend, and has also contributed to knowing how I want to work as a counsellor. Drawing on these experiences of difficulty, and the experiences of attending counselling has made me a better counsellor. It has helped me notice even the smallest steps people are taking to reclaim their lives from problems.
      • What do you like most about being a therapist?

      • My favourite part is meeting a diverse range of people and hearing their stories - each person brings unique knowledge of how they are navigating life's challenges. At times problems cloud people's thinking, or block their view of their skills and knowledge, so a very rewarding part of this work for me is supporting people to recognise these forgotten or neglected stories of skills, knowledge, values, hopes and dreams.
      • Do you ever have 'bad hair' days?

      • Yes, I imagine everyone has days that don't go as we'd hoped. For me it is about picking myself up, reconnecting to my supports, and starting afresh.
      • What do you think is the most significant problem we face, in the world today?

      • In the Western world there is such a huge emphasis on individualism - the idea that we are separate, self-contained units. Along with the pressure from capitalism - that our value resides in how productive we are - I think this invites a sense of failure and neglects the value of connection and interdependence that can help us get through difficult times. One of the ways I work is to help people connect with a support team. This can be people who inspire you, or loved people you hold in your memory, or people currently in your life who can be a source of support. It is an option to invite a support person to the session, or we can be thoughtful about finding creative ways to generate support, without necessarily telling the person the particularities of the problem. I can explain this more when we meet.
      • Can you share the name of a book, film, song, event or work of art that inspires you?

      • In hard times I like the song by Tom Petty, 'Won't back down', as it inspires me to keep going. I prefer Dawn Landes' rendition.

        I enjoy the Dave Eggers book, 'You shall know our velocity', because even though things don't go to plan, the main character embraces the adventure and exhilaration of exploring life. I also like Haruki Murakami, as his writing is a bit 'out there' - it gets me thinking differently.

        As an exploration of challenges and joys in relationships, I like Richard Linklater's trilogy, 'Before Sunrise', 'Before Sunset', 'Before Midnight'. It was filmed approximately every 9 years, so the characters and actors grew through life at the same rate as I did.

I am also very interested in supporting people in steps they are taking to reclaim their lives from recent or past sexual or physical abuse.
