Master of Creative Music Therapy - 2005
Australian Music Therapists Association

Sessions can be individual or group. Techniques such as improvisation, song-writing, instrument playing, vocalisation/singing, drumming and movement are employed in order to engage the client and to facilitate self-expression. I use the Nordoff-Robbins approach which doesn't require the client to possess music skills. It is client-directed and suitable for people with disabilities, as it re-trains the brain to think in an ordered way, and can address sensory integration dysfunction. Music therapists work to specific goals, reviewing and evaluating the program regularly. The client and/or healthcare team are consulted in regard to the program's aims. Various evaluation methods can be used, in particular the Nordoff-Robbins Scales of Assessment which have been formulated to chart the client's progress. We regularly attend AMTA conferences and are bound by AMTA's code of ethics and professional continuing development program.

There are 2 therapists at the Adelaide Music Therapy Centre with various areas of experience and expertise. We have both been performers, composers and have both worked in aged care, with family groups, children and adults with disabilities such as autism, global delay and learning difficulties. Our bios can be checked out on our website - www.musicaltherapy.com.au My orientation is the Nordoff-Robbins approach to music therapy which uses improvisation, both vocal and instrumental, to match the client's mood and energy. Once a connection is established with the client, one can then progress to guiding the client into new, safe ways of expressing him/herself. This method can be used with non-verbal people and those with profound disabilities, as modifications can be made to assist with holding instruments etc.

Session times can be during the day or early evening. We will endeavour to accommodate the client and attendants as much as possible. The Adelaide Music Therapy Centre is in the grounds of the Flinders Park Primary School at 70 Holbrooks Rd Flinders Park. It is on a bus route (website contains a map) and parking is available in the grounds close to the building.

Fees are $30 per 30 mins, $45 for 45 mins and $60 for an hour for individual sessions. Group sessions can be negotiated, using $10 per person as a guide. Initial assessment sessions are offered for $20. At this stage payment is required in cash. Sessions of 5 or 10 are paid for in advance and no refund is offered if a session is missed without 24 hours' notice, unless there are mitigating circumstances.
