Mental Illness

No Middle Name
No Middle Name -
a mother talks about youth suicide
by Tilly Brasch

Description

No Middle Name is a heart-wrenching tale of every parent's worst nightmare - the death of their child. Tilly Brasch compels us to look closely at her son, Riley, who was let down at every turn by a system unable to deal with the mentally ill.  Utterly frustrated and fearing that he was a burden to his loved ones, Riley ultimately took his own life. Like many young people in society today, Riley just wanted to be free and to "decide his own decides".

Rather than withdraw into self-pity and recrimination, the author finds consolation for herself and hope for others in organisations dedicated to helping those who society seems to have forgotten. (All author proceeds go to Stepping Stone Clubhouse.)

About the Author

Tilly Brasch spent her early years in the north and west of Queensland and raised two children, Jacoba and Riley. When the children were in their teens, Tilly embarked on an administrative career in tertiary education. During this time, she gained an Arts degree and discovered the joy of writing. After the onset of Riley's mental illness, Tilly lobbied politicians and appeared in the media in an effort to expose the plight of these neglected members of our community. This book, No Middle Name, is an extension of her desire to raise public awareness, reform the health system, and improve the quality of life for those who still suffer as Riley did.
