Art is the transformation of clumsiness into gracefulness.

I had no idea there were so many different kinds of psychotherapy. And, I might add, I've been seeing a therapist for almost a year and still have no idea which kind he practices. After reading your Choosing a Therapist page, I reflected on what it is that I think makes a good therapist.

I'm not keen on formalities and I'm not comfortable with vast amounts of protocol. I like my therapist because he doesn't try and impress me with what he knows or any special effects. I don't know if it's possible to be a therapist and abstain from practicing technique, but I do know that it's possible for technique to be unobvious. Art is the transformation of clumsiness into gracefulness; Artists make the difficult look easy. There is a naturalness about the way they operate.

Mastering a skill takes time and practice. More than that, it requires an understanding of the nature of skill; or applied awareness as I call it. Everything we do requires some level of skill, even breathing. A therapist who knows this also knows that technique is not about trying on hats, not even edward de bono's thinking hats!
