Brett O'Connor Psychologist
Psychologists are experts in human behaviour, and have studied the brain, memory, learning and human development. They have also studied how people think, feel, behave and react, and can help you cope with difficult situations. My focus as a psychologist is to help children, adolescents and young adults to learn more efficiently, to overcome barriers that are preventing successful school, work or life experiences, and to assist families to find ways of functioning more effectively.
Main areas of practice include: anxiety problems including excessive worry, panic attacks, other fears and phobias; depression and mood disorders; anger management; confidence, self esteem, assertiveness and social skills training; career aptitudes and interests - assessment and planning; relationships problems and sexual issues; assessment of intelligence, school readiness, learning delay and learning difficulties; study motivation and study skills development; child and adolescent issues.
CBT, Developmental, MBTI, Person Centred, Solution Oriented
I have a special interest in working with children, adolescents and young adults, and am able to provide assessment and intervention services including psychological testing, educational interventions, counselling and family support.
I use a range of psychological strategies, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and play therapy - extremely effective approaches when counselling children and young people.
I access on-going professional development and am a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS). The APS aims to assist its members throughout Australia to maintain and to improve the quality of the services provided to clients and thus guarantee the highest level of psychological services at all times. Furthermore, the APS promotes high standards for psychological services for the benefit of the community through education, training and research.
For almost 20 years I have worked with children, adolescents, adults and families involved in schools, TAFE, university, child protection, residential and foster care settings. I have experience treating a range of individual and family problems, including learning and behavioural difficulties, anxiety, depression, and abuse (physical, sexual and emotional). I am also accredited as a Supervisor of Provisional Psychologists under the PBA Internship Program.
